I was invited to perform with Jonathan Ferguson (Long Jon Lev) on February 17, and though I was already fascinated with the idea when I first heard about it, I was even more intrigued when I saw Deanne in action – how she promoted the event and the atmosphere she created (thus the aforementioned article).
And you’ll have to forgive me for my bias, but I think The Listening Room series is one of the best things happening in the Calgary music scene right now. I think it has the potential to gain a lot of attention from concertgoers, and I would encourage you to check out one of the upcoming shows. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, so you don’t have much to lose.
On Wednesday, April 20, 2016, the Northern Beauties will be performing as part of the ongoing series. As per Deanne’s website:
Their songs lay a haunted melody upon the best of folk tradition and nail it to a Country & Western heart. Featuring the harmonies of duo vocalists Todd Stewart and Craig Aikman, Calgary band Northern Beauties has become a true local favorite. Like love letters found in an old shoebox from a prairie romances long ago, they make you feel like we are all Northern Beauties.
Make sure to check out their website (link above) if you’re interested in hearing and learning more about them. I wish I could make the concert, but I’m teaching guitar that night. I will hopefully see you at a future installation.
Upcoming concerts for The Listening Room series also include Angie C, an award-winning classically trained pianist, composer and singer/songwriter on May 18, as well as Darren Johnson – an Acoustic Roots & Blues performer that has been described as sitting somewhere between Tom Waits and Leon Redbone, Howlin Wolf and Willie Nelson – on June 15.
